A statutory injunction, effective immediately upon the filing of a bankruptcy case, prohibiting certain creditor actions against the debtor or the debtor’s property. The automatic stay is designed to provide the debtor a “breathing spell” after the bankruptcy filing. Creditors are allowed to seek relief from the stay.
